Rajshahi: Speakers at a discussion here today emphasized that effective and vibrant cooperatives are crucial for enhancing living standards and bolstering the economy in both urban and rural areas. They underscored the need to invigorate the cooperative movement to help liberate the nation from poverty and hunger.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Department of Cooperatives organized the event at the Shilpakala Academy Auditorium in the city, commemorating the 54th National Cooperatives Day-2025. The day was observed under the theme "Cooperatives will build the country through equality and justice" ("Sammo O Somotay, Desh Gorbe Somobay").
Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Khondoker Azim Ahmed attended the event as the chief guest, with DIG of Police Dr. Muhammad Shahjahan, RMP Commissioner Muhammad Abu Sufian, and Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter serving as special guests. Joint Registrar of the Cooperative Department Mukhlesur Rahman presided over the meeting.
Before the discussion, a documentary showcasing cooperative achievements was screened, highlighting the impact and success stories of cooperatives in the region.
Commissioner Azim Ahmed pointed out that the cooperative movement can accelerate national development and help fulfill the spirit of the Liberation War through social security and equality.
Dr. Shahjahan emphasized the importance of youth training to develop skilled human resources and reduce unemployment. He noted that rural communities are already reaping benefits from cooperatives in terms of poverty reduction and self-reliance.
The event also recognized the outstanding contributions of three cooperative members with awards. The day concluded with cultural performances by local artists, celebrating the spirit and achievements of the cooperative movement.
