Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has officially validated a total of 120 election symbols to be used in the forthcoming national elections, as confirmed by a recent gazette notification.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the EC finalized the list of electoral symbols after making amendments to the relevant sub-rule of the Election Conduct Rules 2008. Notably, the symbol of 'Boat' has been placed on hold and is not included in the current list of approved symbols. The official gazette was published in an extraordinary issue by the BG Press on Wednesday.
The newly amended rule follows the exercise of powers granted by Article 94 of the Representation of the People Order, 1972. It allows for the allotment of specific symbols to candidates based on the availability of the listed symbols, with suspended symbols excluded from this process.
The comprehensive list of 120 symbols features a variety of items ranging from fruits and animals to vehicles and household objects. Some of these symbols include Pineapple, Apple, Mango, Coconut, Litchi, Jackfruit, Banana bunch, and Date tree. Other symbols in the list are Sunflower, Paddy sheaf, Golden fiber (Jute), Eagle, Camel, Bullock cart, and Cow. Additionally, symbols such as Truck, Tractor, Bicycle, and Rickshaw highlight the diverse range of options.
The list also encompasses symbols like Almirah, Towel (Gamcha), Flower garland, and Book, alongside modern items such as Computer, Mobile phone, and Microphone. The symbol 'Boat', despite having the serial number 65, remains suspended, as indicated in the notification.
All electoral activities moving forward will adhere to the newly amended rules, ensuring that the election process aligns with the updated guidelines set forth by the Election Commission.
