Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has announced a significant revision to the referendum results concerning the implementation of the July National Charter, which is aimed at constitutional reform. This adjustment sees a reduction in both ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ votes compared to the figures previously released.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the updated information was made public through an additional gazette signed by Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Akhtar Ahmad. The new gazette reveals that the ‘Yes’ votes have been adjusted to 47,225,980, while the ‘No’ votes now stand at 21,960,231.
The total number of votes cast in the referendum has been revised to 76,621,407, with 7,435,196 of these votes being declared invalid. This leaves a total of 69,186,211 valid votes. In comparison, the earlier gazette had reported 48,200,660 ‘Yes’ votes and 22,071,726 ‘No’ votes, with a total of 77,695,023 votes cast, of which 7,422,637 were invalid, resulting in 70,272,386 valid votes.
The revision indicates a decrease of 974,680 ‘Yes’ votes and 111,495 ‘No’ votes from the previous figures. Interestingly, while the number of valid votes decreased, the number of invalid ballots increased by 12,559. Overall, the total number of votes cast has declined by 1,073,616 following this revision.
