Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has announced a significant change in the process of retrieving a lost National Identity Card (NID). From now on, individuals will no longer be required to file a General Diary (GD) if their NID is lost.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the decision was communicated by EC's National Identity Registration Wing Director (Administration and Finance) Mohammad Habibur Rahman. He explained that the requirement to file a GD had previously been mandatory for retrieving a lost NID. The change aims to alleviate public inconvenience and streamline the process for citizens.
Rahman emphasized that this decision is expected to significantly reduce the challenges faced by the public in retrieving lost NIDs, promising easier and faster service delivery. The EC's initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public service efficiency.
In the first half of 2025, the EC processed 907,662 NID correction applications as part of a crash program to address issues with National Identity Cards. During the same period, the EC received a total of 984,356 applications for NID correction, indicating the scale of demand for such services.
