Dhaka: A Dhaka University (DU) student has died reportedly after consuming a toxic substance at a rented house in the capital’s Hazaribagh area. The deceased was identified as Saidul Amin, also known as Simanta, a 25-year-old final-year student of the DU chemistry department.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Simanta was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 1:30 am on Friday in an unconscious state, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. Simanta hailed from Birgaon village of Monohardi upazila in Narsingdi and was the son of Sadrul Amin. He had been residing as a subtenant at a house on Moneswar Road in Hazaribagh, as confirmed by relatives.
Quoting the victim’s roommate, Simanta’s uncle Ruhul Amin stated that Simanta locked his room from the inside after 9 pm on Thursday. When he did not respond to repeated calls for an extended period, the house owner was alerted. Subsequently, the door was broken open, revealing him lying unconscious, and he was rushed to the hospital.
Ruhul Amin mentioned that a strong smell of a toxic substance was noticed while Simanta was being transported to the hospital, leading to suspicion that he might have ingested poison. However, the reason behind this act remains unknown. Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, reported that the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
