Dhaka: The Dhaka University (DU) authorities today filed a case with Shahbag Police Station concerning the burning of a motif depicting Sheikh Hasina’s face at the university’s Fine Arts Faculty. The motif was created for the Noboborsho Shobhajatra celebration.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, some unknown individuals have been accused in the case, as confirmed by Shahbag Police Station officer-in-charge Khalid Mansur this afternoon. Earlier, the Fine Arts Faculty had lodged a general diary with the police station following the incident.

CCTV footage analysis revealed that a man set fire to the motif early Saturday morning. The fire completely destroyed the motif of Sheikh Hasina and partially damaged an adjacent motif called ‘Peace Dove’.

DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed reported that the perpetrator accessed the site by jumping over a wall, poured a liquid on the motif, and set it ablaze before fleeing towards Suhrawardy Udyan. Efforts are currently underway to identify the individual responsible.

In response to the incident, the university administration has established a five-member committee to investigate the matter thoroughly.
