Dhaka: Dhaka University has established two new trust funds, the Nurun Nahar Memorial Trust Fund and the K M A Malik Trust Fund, aimed at supporting student scholarships at the Institute of Health Economics and the Department of Chemistry.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the two trust funds collectively amount to nearly Taka 1 crore. DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan was present as the chief guest at the cheque handover ceremony. Retired Professor Dr. Shamsuddin Ahmed from the Institute of Health Economics contributed Taka 89 lakh in memory of his late wife, Nurun Nahar, and handed over the cheque to DU Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury at the ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
Similarly, retired Professor Dr. Mohammad Yusuf Ali Molla donated Taka 10 lakh on behalf of his family to establish the K M A Malik Trust Fund for Chemistry students. Additionally, he contributed Taka 3 lakh to enhance the capital of the existing Asefa Haque Memorial Trust Fund. Present at the cheque handover were Chairperson of the Chemistry Department Professor Farida Begum, Professor Md Abu Bin Hasan Susan, and Associate Professor Israt Jahan Kakoli of the Institute of Health Economics.
Proceeds from the Nurun Nahar Memorial Trust Fund will provide annual scholarships to one female student from each department under the Faculty of Arts. The award will be given to the MA student who achieves the highest CGPA in the BA (Honours) examination, with each recipient receiving Taka 48,000 annually, disbursed at Taka 4,000 per month. Earnings from the K M A Malik Trust Fund will be awarded to the highest and second-highest CGPA holders in the BSc (Honours) examinations of the Chemistry Department. Students will continue to receive regular support from the Asefa Haque Memorial Trust Fund as well.
