Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has exceeded its waste removal target following the Eid-ul-Azha festivities. The corporation successfully removed more animal waste than anticipated from cattle markets and sacrificial sites.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DSCC administrator Md. Abdus Salam reported that 36,086 tonnes of waste were transported to the Matuail Landfill over three days post-Eid. This surpassed the initial target of 33,942 tonnes, marking a significant achievement in waste management efforts. Salam shared these details during a briefing at Nagar Bhaban.
Salam explained that the operation involved 13,453 sanitation workers, including DSCC personnel and PCSP workers. To facilitate the waste transportation, 2,117 vehicles, including 382 special-purpose machines, were deployed. On the first day, 14,814 tonnes of waste were removed, followed by 8,977 tonnes on the second day, and 12,295 tonnes on the third day.
Typically, Dhaka manages between 3,200 and 3,500 tonnes of waste daily, but this volume increases substantially during Eid, presenting significant challenges amidst limited resources. Salam emphasized that public cooperation played a vital role in easing the task, as many residents adhered to designated sacrifice and disposal locations. However, he acknowledged that full public awareness remains a work in progress.
Salam highlighted that 17,315 animals were sacrificed at 357 designated spots under DSCC's jurisdiction. Additionally, cleanup from 11 temporary cattle markets is nearly finalized. However, some market leaseholders failed to meet their waste removal obligations promptly, causing public inconvenience. Consequently, DSCC has decided to forfeit their security deposits and blacklist them, with plans to enforce stricter measures in the future.
Addressing the city's residents, Salam encouraged them to report any uncollected waste via the designated hotline, promising prompt removal within an hour. He expressed regret for any temporary inconveniences and extended gratitude to residents for their cooperation, urging continued public involvement in maintaining a cleaner Dhaka.
