Dhaka: In response to a recent surge in mosquito infestation, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a month-long special cleanliness and crash program aimed at mosquito control. DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam formally launched the campaign at Ward no 71 and 72. State Minister for Road Transport and Highways Division and Railways Ministry Habibur Rashid attended the event as special guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the drive was inaugurated with Abdus Salam emphasizing the need for strengthened efforts in mosquito control. To ensure transparency and accountability, a four-tier monitoring system has been introduced at different levels. Local Imams will be engaged to raise public awareness alongside miking in the affected areas. Salam warned that if the residents fail to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, mobile courts will be conducted by the executive magistrates. He urged local Members of Parliament (MPs) and political leaders to actively participate in the drive.
State Minister Habibur Rashid highlighted the importance of focusing on underdeveloped and underserved areas of the city. He assured that the government would extend full support to the city corporation in reclaiming and freeing canals from encroachments, which are known as mosquito breeding grounds.
Around 250 workers from DSCC’s waste management and health departments took part in the drive, which began at 9:00 am. They cleaned canals, drains, sewerage lines, and footpaths, and applied mosquito control chemicals. A public awareness rally was also held with the participation of local residents and members of BD Clean. DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Zahirul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, along with the heads of different departments and local leaders, were present.
