Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Valiant Freedom Fighter Md Abdus Salam has said no negligence in providing civic services will be tolerated. ‘From now on, at least one day a week, surprise inspections will be conducted in any area of DSCC to assess the quality of civic services, including waste management, mosquito control, revenue collection, street lighting and engineering. If even the slightest negligence is found in service delivery by any department, immediate administrative action will be taken against the relevant officials,’ he said.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the administrator made the remarks at a press briefing after a coordinated drive involving all DSCC departments in the Science Lab and City College areas of the capital this morning to inspect waste management, mosquito control, street lighting, revenue collection and removal of illegal occupation of footpaths.
The administrator emphasized that effectively managing such a vast area as Dhaka South requires more than just office work at Nagar Bhaban. This necessity has led to the introduction of area-based public hearings. The DSCC has been actively visiting areas, listening to the problems and suggestions of citizens, and providing necessary instructions to related officials based on these interactions.
Over the past five months, city corporation officials and employees, alongside ordinary citizens, were urged to stay vigilant and cooperate. Now, the administrator believes it is time to supervise these efforts actively. He warned citizens about their responsibilities, indicating that strict fines would be imposed if anyone dumped garbage indiscriminately or created conditions conducive to the breeding of Aedes mosquito larvae by allowing water to accumulate.
Expressing his determination to transform Dhaka South City Corporation into a ‘Clean and Green City,’ he emphasized the need for public awareness and coordinated cooperation. During the drive, the administrator inspected footpaths, various establishments, and business premises. Trade licenses were scrutinized, and illegally operated mobile shops on footpaths were confiscated, with legal action following.
Simultaneously, separate mobile courts were conducted under the leadership of three DSCC executive magistrates. During the drive, A Hossain Builder was fined Taka 100,000 under Section 269 of the Penal Code, with three months’ imprisonment in default, after Aedes mosquito larvae were found in stagnant water at an under-construction building.
Moreover, Rasui restaurant faced a fine of Taka 10,000 under Section 52 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, for serving food in an unhygienic environment. Additionally, Dhanmondi Popular Diagnostic Centre was fined Taka 5,000 for illegal parking on the footpath. The DSCC authorities have indicated that such coordinated drives and mobile court operations will continue in the public interest.
