Dhaka: People once willingly gave up their land for infrastructure development, but a trend of grabbing government land has emerged, stated Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam at an event on Sunday. He was speaking as the chief guest at a tree-planting programme in the Japanese Bazar area of Kadamtali police station.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Abdus Salam called for cooperation from city residents, emphasizing the need for an integrated plan for the development of the area. He highlighted ongoing issues with roads and electricity, noting that both he and the State Minister were tasked with inspecting the area to implement necessary measures.
Abdus Salam urged residents to be more aware of canal encroachments and the improper disposal of industrial waste. He stressed that maintaining functional drainage systems requires factories to adhere to waste management regulations, and emphasized the importance of preserving the city's canals.
Addressing concerns about social issues, the DSCC administrator pointed out the pervasive problem of drug saturation in society. He advocated for a united social movement to build resistance against drug abuse.
In his remarks, Abdus Salam criticized the previous government for alleged financial mismanagement, citing reports of looting and empty banks, which have left ordinary people unable to access their deposits. He also commented on the power deal with Indian company Adani, claiming that the company stopped supplying electricity to parts of the country.
Abdus Salam concluded by seeking active cooperation from both ordinary citizens and government bodies to tackle these pressing challenges. The event was attended by prominent figures including reserved women's seat MP for Dhaka-4 Sultana, Dhaka city BNP Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin, Joint Convener Haji Monir Hossain Chairman, Haji Mir Hossain Mirus, and local BNP leaders and activists.
