Collection of milk from the dairy farmers has been adversely affected in Hetauda Dairy Distribution Project due to decrease in milk production. It is caused by the prolonged dry weather till recent week in Terai area.

The Project had been collecting some 22,000 to 23,000 litres of milk on a daily basis until some months ago while it stands at 6,000 litres a day now, said Rajiv Khanal, Chief of the Project.

The Project used to sell some 4,000 litres milk to local consumers in Birgunj, Hetauda and Bharatpur cities on a daily basis while 12,000 litres is sent to Biratnagar for power milk production.

The Project sources milk from some 200 dairy producers’ cooperatives in Sarlahi, Bara, Rautahat, Parsa districts in Madhesh Pradesh and Makawanpur in Bagmati Province.

But due to the decline in milk collection, the facility has not been able to sell its product in the same ratio as in the past, Khanal added.

With the onset of monsoon and rainfall in Terai, availability of fodder would increase, thereby contribut
ing to higher milk production from the cattle and similar collection at dairies
