Dhaka: Assignment editors and chief reporters from various television channels have called for substantive measures to improve the professional standards of journalists. The discussion centered on the need for a registration system, a distinct wage structure for television journalists, the reduction of unethical practices, and the promotion of technology-driven journalism. These issues were raised during a views-exchange meeting held today at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU)'s Shafiqul Kabir auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon chaired the session, with General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel moderating the discussions. Akon articulated that mainstream journalism is encountering significant challenges due to the misuse of press identity and unprofessional reporting, which have marred the reputation of authentic journalists. He emphasized the importance of implementing a transparent registration system, conducting financial capability assessments before issuing media licenses, and ensuring the regular payment of salaries to journalists.
The DRU General Secretary highlighted the organization's achievements, such as securing five-day Eid holidays for journalists and ongoing efforts to establish two weekly holidays. He also mentioned the ongoing initiatives aimed at setting Taka 35,000 as the minimum entry-level salary for journalists, reflecting DRU's commitment to improving journalists' living standards.
During the meeting, representatives from television channels and journalists' leaders advocated for the formation of workshops, a wage board, job security measures, AI-based training programs, and enhanced welfare initiatives. These steps are seen as crucial to safeguarding journalists' rights and dignity while elevating the standards of journalism in the country.
