Khulna: Police have taken a driver into custody and seized a private car linked to the tragic death of a Khulna University student in a road accident within the city. Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) shared this development on Monday at noon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the deceased, Moumita Halder, was pursuing her Master’s in Law at Khulna University. The fatal incident took place on March 30 at approximately 6:50 pm. Moumita was traveling by rickshaw with her father towards the court area when a speeding private car collided with them from behind near Zila Parishad Bhaban on K D Ghosh Road.
The impact caused Moumita to fall from the rickshaw, resulting in severe head injuries. She was immediately taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead at around 7:50 pm. The following day, Moumita’s father filed a formal complaint with Khulna Sadar Police Station.
Sub Inspector (SI) Debabrata Biswas, the Investigation Officer, examined CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify the vehicle involved. The police subsequently located the blue Toyota private car in a garage behind Coronation School in the city on April 3, around 12:05 pm.
Using advanced information technology, the police apprehended the driver, Md. Ahad Sheikh Saikat, 26, from the northern gate area of Hadis Park under Khulna Sadar Police Station at approximately 6:05 pm on April 5. The accused has since been presented before the court.
