Dhaka: Reminding everyone of their responsibility towards nature, Chairman and CEO of Surfin Meta Digital Technology (SMDT) Pte Ltd Dr Yanan Wu emphasized that economic and technological progress must align with nature conservation efforts. ‘We owe something to nature. We owe something to creation,’ Dr Wu remarked, highlighting the responsibility to give back after benefiting from nature for so many years.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Dr Wu expressed his support for conservation initiatives aimed at safeguarding endangered wildlife and preserving biodiversity for future generations. The soft launch of the second edition of ‘The Bangladesh Sundarban,’ authored by Cosmos Group and WildTeam founder Enayetullah Khan, took place at the Cosmos Centre Auditorium. The event was attended by conservationists and wildlife experts, including Prof Dr Md Anwarul Islam and Enam Ul Haque, who praised the book’s documentation of the Sundarban’s rich natural heritage.
Dr Wu, who began his career as a research scientist, underscored the importance of living in harmony with nature amid climate change and natural disasters. He urged collective action, emphasizing that technology could support financial inclusion and conservation efforts. ‘Eventually, we hope to contribute back to nature, because we owe so much to the nature that has supported us for so many years,’ he said.
Highlighting Surfin Meta’s mission, Dr Wu discussed the use of technology to bridge the gap between affluence and poverty. He recounted his experiences in emerging markets, notably Indonesia, where he witnessed stark contrasts in living conditions. He proposed using technology to dismantle barriers to financial services for underserved communities.
Dr Wu’s commitment to financial inclusion is also informed by his interests in education and social development. He cited education and financial access as foundational pillars for improving lives, drawing inspiration from Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. He suggested that artificial intelligence could enhance financial inclusion by offering personalized financial guidance.
The event also showcased WildTeam’s conservation efforts, including the establishment of the Conservation Biology Centre and the publication of the second edition of ‘The Bangladesh Sundarban.’ Enayetullah Khan highlighted the Sundarban’s significance as a conservation resource and expressed gratitude to Dr Wu for supporting the book’s publication. Prof Dr Md Anwarul Islam stressed the urgency of protecting the remaining tiger population in the Sundarbans, highlighting the involvement of local communities in conservation activities.
