Dhaka: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today commemorated Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, honoring him as a fearless soldier in the movement to restore democracy. In his message marking 'Shaheed Dr Milon Day', Rahman praised Dr Milon's ultimate sacrifice, which reinvigorated the fight for democracy and propelled the nine-year-long struggle against the autocratic Ershad regime towards its final victory.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rahman emphasized Dr Milon's unwavering commitment to overthrowing autocracy and reinstating democratic rights for the people. He credited Dr Milon's sacrifice as pivotal in the fall of autocracy and the re-establishment of democracy in the country, leading to a new democratic journey under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia.

Rahman paid his deepest respects to Dr Milon, praying for the salvation of his departed soul. He also criticized the past 16 years under the Awami League regime, claiming it had stripped citizens of their rights and buried democracy. He stated that the people lost ownership of the country under the deposed government.

Rahman noted the achievement of a new form of freedom through the unified movement of students and the public on August 5, 2024, yet acknowledged ongoing domestic and foreign conspiracies against the nation. He expressed confidence that unity would thwart these conspiracies, with Dr Milon's self-sacrifice continuing to serve as an inspiration.
