Dhaka: Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Chief Adviser's High Representative for the Rohingya Issue and Priority Affairs, was redesignated as the National Security Adviser today. The Cabinet Division has issued a gazette notification to this end. Dr. Khalil will retain his functions as the High Representative for the Rohingya issue and will also assist the Chief Adviser in the discharge of his responsibilities relating to the Ministry of Defence.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Khalil expressed his gratitude to the Chief Adviser for the continued trust and confidence. He emphasized his awareness of the gravity of the responsibilities and committed to upholding and advancing the national interest.
Dr. Khalil entered the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) in 1979 after achieving the first position in the first regular civil service examination post-independence in 1977. He has served in various roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York. In 1991, he joined the United Nations Secretariat as a Special Adviser and held different senior positions over the next 25 years. In November 2024, he was appointed as the High Representative with the status and privileges of an adviser.
Dr. Khalil achieved first class first in MA examinations in Economics at Dhaka University in 1977. Between 1980 and 1983, he attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, earning degrees in MA in Law and Diplomacy and a PhD in Economics.
