Dhaka: Dr Baharul Alam officially took charge as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) this morning, succeeding outgoing IGP Md Moinul Islam. The government appointed him for a two-year term on Wednesday. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Baharul Alam joined the police service on January 21, 1986, as a cadet of the sixth batch of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS), commonly referred to as the 84th batch. Throughout his career, he served in various capacities, including the chief of the Special Branch (SB) and Additional Inspector General at the Bangladesh Police headquarters. Dr Alam's international experience includes serving as a senior police liaison officer with the United Nations peacekeeping department from 2009 to 2013 and working as a Senior Police Adviser in the UN Peace Keeping Force in Afghanistan. He also participated in UN peacekeeping missions in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone. He retired from active service in 2020. Upon his arrival at the Police Headquarters this morni ng, the newly appointed IGP was honoured with a guard of honour by a contingent of police officers.
