DHAKA: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated today that Donald Trump, the newly elected President of the United States, was misinformed regarding the issue of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. Addressing a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, Alam expressed confidence that President Trump, with access to accurate information, would gain a clearer understanding of the situation.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam highlighted that a significant amount of misinformation has been circulated about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh. He emphasized the presence of a US embassy in Dhaka, suggesting that it would enable the US administration to observe the actual circumstances and verify whether any persecution of minorities is occurring.

The press secretary referred to a report by the Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian Council, which cited the deaths of nine individuals from the Hindu community as being religiously motivated. However, he pointed out that Netra News contrad
icted this claim, attributing the deaths instead to personal enmities or political disputes.

Alam expressed hope that leaders of minority religious communities would contribute to an accurate depiction of the situation by providing truthful reports and demonstrating responsibility in their roles. He also addressed the ongoing investigation by the government into the reissuance of passports for former speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and her husband.

Present at the briefing were Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Apurba Jahangir. The discussion comes in response to a recent post by Donald Trump on X, formerly known as Twitter, where he condemned acts of violence against minorities in Bangladesh.
