Dhaka: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku today announced that a total of 9,367,418 sacrificial animals were slaughtered in the country during this year's Eid-ul-Adha, successfully meeting the entire demand through domestic livestock.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister stated that the total demand for sacrificial animals was 10,106,334, against a domestic supply of 12,333,840. Consequently, a surplus of 2,966,422 animals remains in the country following the Eid celebrations. This information was disclosed during a press briefing at the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at Bangladesh Secretariat.
Preliminary data from eight divisions under the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) revealed that out of the total slaughtered animals, 4,864,158 were cattle and buffaloes, 4,502,233 were goats and sheep, and 1,027 were other animals. The Dhaka division recorded the highest number of sacrifices, with 2,351,666 animals, followed closely by the Rajshahi division with 2,342,869 animals. Other divisions also reported significant numbers: 1,734,025 in Chattogram, 1,050,554 in Rangpur, 846,005 in Khulna, 400,160 in Barishal, 367,818 in Mymensingh, and 274,321 in Sylhet.
The state minister highlighted that the number of sacrificial animals increased by 231,418 compared to the previous year. He attributed this success to the government's timely policy support, the relentless hard work of farmers, and rising investments from entrepreneurs, which have collectively strengthened and made the livestock sector self-reliant.
He emphasized the government's commitment to implementing modern technologies and farmer-friendly policies to further boost the rural economy and ensure the sustainable development of the livestock sector. The briefing was attended by Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Md Delwar Hossain, Director General of the DLS Md Shahzaman Khan, and other senior officials of the ministry.
