Dhaka: Authorities of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) today urged all not to throw garbage and waste haphazardly aimed at keeping the mega city clean and livable.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz made the appeal while inaugurating the construction work of a road, drain, and footpath in the Polashnagar area under Mirpur section-11. The DNCC plans to construct an 11-kilometer road, 35-kilometer drain, and 13-kilometer footpath in wards 2, 3, 4, and 5 under its jurisdiction.
Mohammad Azaz highlighted the contrast between developed cities and those in Bangladesh, noting the absence of street garbage in developed countries. He emphasized that conservancy staff work nightly until 8:00 am to maintain cleanliness, collecting eight lakh tonnes of garbage daily from both city corporations. Residents are encouraged to dispose of waste in designated areas to facilitate efficient collection.
The DNCC Administrator also called on homeowners to consider creating rooftop gardens, suggesting that incentives could be provided by the city corporation for such initiatives. He appealed to affluent residents to offer pure drinking water to those unable to afford mineral water, and to place water in accessible locations for animals during the heat wave.
On the matter of rickshaw traffic, Azaz urged residents to report illegal rickshaw garages and stated that battery-operated auto-rickshaws would not be permitted on main roads. The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is developing a specific auto-rickshaw design, and licenses will be issued to drivers following proper training.
