Dhaka:The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has announced an ambitious modernisation roadmap aimed at enhancing its capabilities in tackling drug networks through the establishment of specialised investigative units, advanced drug-detection technology, and a dedicated training academy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the proposed initiatives include setting up a Cyber Security and Money Laundering Unit, a canine squad, and a digital forensic laboratory. These measures are designed to enhance investigations into technology-facilitated drug trafficking and illicit financial networks.

The DNC plans to establish a specialised training academy, recruit specialised public prosecutors, and equip personnel with modern enforcement tools like body-worn cameras and advanced X-ray scanners. Additional Director General Mohammad Golam Azam stated that the roadmap aims to transform the DNC into a technology-driven enforcement agency capable of addressing evolving drug-related threats.

As part of its infrastructure expansion, the DNC intends to construct dedicated office buildings at district and upazila levels and establish prosecution offices within Chief Metropolitan Magistrate courts to improve coordination in drug-related cases. The proposed canine squad and Cyber Security Unit are expected to bolster drug detection and the investigation of technology-based trafficking.

The DNC also plans to sign a memorandum with the Armed Police Battalion for joint anti-narcotics operations, aiming to enhance information-sharing and coordination at strategic locations. However, the success of this modernisation plan relies on timely funding, filling 671 vacant positions, and addressing transport shortages in 13 districts.
