Dhaka:The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has announced a comprehensive modernization plan aimed at enhancing its capabilities to combat drug networks. The roadmap includes the creation of specialized investigative units, the adoption of advanced drug-detection technologies, and the establishment of a dedicated training academy. These initiatives are designed to expedite the prosecution of narcotics-related cases and improve overall enforcement effectiveness.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the proposed plan features the establishment of a Cyber Security and Money Laundering Unit, a dedicated canine squad, and a digital forensic laboratory. These additions aim to bolster investigations into technology-facilitated drug trafficking and illicit financial networks. The DNC also plans to recruit specialized public prosecutors and equip field officers with modern enforcement tools such as body-worn cameras and advanced X-ray scanners.
Additional Director General Mohammad Golam Azam highlighted the department's intention to transform into a technology-driven enforcement agency. The DNC's plan includes expanding infrastructure by constructing office buildings at district and upazila levels and establishing prosecution offices at Chief Metropolitan Magistrate courts to enhance coordination between investigators and prosecutors.
The modernization plan also proposes a memorandum of understanding with the Armed Police Battalion to conduct joint anti-narcotics operations at strategic locations, improving information-sharing and coordination. Addressing manpower and logistical shortages is a priority, as the department currently operates below its approved workforce, with significant gaps in transport facilities and detection equipment.
To engage the public more effectively, the DNC intends to introduce hotlines and anti-drug awareness initiatives. The roadmap emphasizes recruitment, specialized training, and institutional coordination as critical components for successful implementation, contingent upon securing necessary funding and resources.
