Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today issued a set of 14 directives to ensure overall security in the capital ahead of the Eid ul Fitr and during the Eid vacation.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the law enforcement agency formulated the directives to ensure security of households, shopping malls, and establishments. The guideline took into consideration the fact that the country this year is likely to witness a relatively longer Eid vacation, which could be as high as nine days of holidays. ‘We have called upon the residents of the city to follow the instructions to ensure greater security during the Eid vacation,’ a DMP statement said.

The outline of the 14-point directive includes measures such as strengthening the vigilance of security guards at homes, apartments, banks, insurance companies, and various institutions and shops through 24-hour surveillance against illegal intrusion. It also suggests staggering the leave of officers and employees of institutions, ensuring that doors and windows are properly locked, and securing them with multiple locks if necessary.

Additional recommendations involve installing an adequate number of CCTV cameras in houses, institutions, and shops, and ensuring their functionality. The use of auto-locks and locks with security alarms on main doors is advised, along with keeping surroundings well-lit at night. Valuables and important documents should be stored securely or entrusted to close relatives, with the option of using a bank locker if needed.

Residents are urged to inform neighbors who will remain in the city to keep an eye on their homes and to maintain contact by phone. Tenants should notify house owners in advance if they plan to leave for Eid. Security personnel should be warned not to allow unauthorized entry into homes or institutions.

Before leaving, it should be ensured that electrical appliances, water taps, and gas stoves are turned off. The garage should be secured, and any tree branches that could facilitate unauthorized entry should be trimmed. Suspicious activity should be reported to local police outposts or stations immediately.

In case of emergencies, residents can contact the DMP Control Room or use the National Emergency Service Number. The DMP has assured city dwellers that they have taken measures to ensure their safety and security, emphasizing their commitment to protecting lives and property. Cooperation from residents is sought to maintain law and order, with auxiliary police officers assigned to assist the regular force.
