Khulna: Speakers at a discussion here today said that maintaining discipline, taking prescribed diets and medicines, and engaging in regular physical exercise are very important for the patients suffering from diabetes. They also unanimously opined that creating mass-awareness can be the vital means of reducing the number of diabetics. They came up with the observation while addressing a discussion marking the World Diabetes Day-2024 on the Khulna Diabetes Association premises in the city. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the theme of the day is 'Diabetes: Our Commitment to Good Health.' The event featured Khulna Divisional Commissioner and Administrator of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) as the chief guest, with BNP City Unit Convener Advocate S M Shafiqul Alam Mona presiding over the meeting. Khulna Metropolitan Commissioner (KMP) Md Zulfikar Ali Haider and Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Shafiqul Islam addressed the programme as honorable guests. Convener of the World Diabetes Day Udjapon Committee- 2024, advocate Taslima Khatun Chanda, delivered the welcome speech. During the discussion, the chief guest described diabetes as a silent killer and emphasized the importance of creating mass awareness about the disease to combat it effectively. KMP Commissioner Md Zulfikar Ali Haider highlighted that regular physical exercise, maintaining a disciplined life, and adhering to a balanced diet can significantly reduce the risk of diabetes. He urged educational institutions and parents to ensure that the new generation adopts healthy food habits. Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Shafiqul Islam underscored the necessity of raising awareness to prevent diabetes and called upon public and private entities, including civil society, to contribute to this effort. He stated that living a normal life is possible by controlling the disease and noted that about 75% of people are unaware of the risks associated with diabetes, which is often referred to as a silent killer. Earlier, a colorful rally was organized in the city to mark the occasion.
