Birganj:Dinajpur The traditional Dhemadhemia Kali Fair, which has been a hallmark event in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur district for approximately 200 years, is set to commence on November 8. The upazila administration will manage the fair, continuing the tradition from previous years.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the preparations for the fair, which marks the conclusion of the Bengali month of Kartik before winter, have been finalized. A major feature of the event is the trading of cattle, buffaloes, and horses, drawing substantial interest from traders and visitors alike.
The fair, held annually on the occasion of Shyama Puja, has grown into a month-long celebration attracting Hindu devotees and visitors from across the northern region. It remains a significant cultural and recreational event, drawing people from various professions, religions, and communities to the villages of Bairabari, Chapapara, and Hiramoni under Palashbari Union.
The site of the fair is strategically located near major districts and enjoys good communication facilities due to its proximity to the Panchagarh-Dhaka highway. The fairground's central location among districts like Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Nilphamari, and Dinajpur adds to the anticipation and excitement surrounding the event.
At the heart of the fair stands the Kali temple, situated on a one-acre plot in a tall building, with the shrine of Darbesh Mirajun Mia nearby. Despite the proximity of these religious establishments, local residents highlight a strong communal harmony, with people from all backgrounds participating in the festivities.
Entertainment at the fair is diverse, featuring traditional Jatra performances, puppet shows, circuses, and modern digital entertainment. Additionally, the fair provides an opportunity for visitors to purchase household essentials, furniture, clothing, and other goods.
Birganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Suma Khatun stated that despite a dispute between temple attendant groups, the fair would proceed under the upazila administration's oversight, in collaboration with local leaders, ensuring it remains a source of enjoyment for attendees.
Security measures will be enhanced by Birganj Police to maintain peace throughout the fair. The upazila administration, with the Deputy Commissioner's approval, will manage tolls for trade transactions at the event, ensuring orderly conduct.
The fair's inauguration on November 8 will kick off a grand trading festival, with active participation from traders nationwide, ensuring a vibrant and successful event.
