Dialysis fee hike: 3 cops sued for torturing protestors in custody

Three police personnel of Chittagong Metropolitan Police were sued for allegedly torturing a youth in police custody.

Md Mostakim, who was detained for protesting the recent hike in dialysis fee at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital, filed the case with the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court on Monday.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of CMP Panchlaish police station, Mohammad Nazim Uddin,42, among the accused.

Judge Begum Jebunnesa recorded the statement of the complainant and directed Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the case, said Zia Habib Ahsan, lawyer of the petitioner.

The court also ordered CID to submit the report by March 27.

According to the statement, police detained Mostakim from the CMCH during the patientsโ€™ demonstrations over hike in dialysis fees on January 10.

OC Nazim first took Mostakim to a private diagnostic center and beat him. Later, he was taken to the outpost and tortured inhumanly.

During the beating, SI Abdul Aziz also hurled abusive words at Mostakim, as per the statement.

The kidney patients and their relatives staged demonstrations in front of the dialysis centre of the hospital protesting the hike in dialysis fee.

On January 11, a case was filed against some kidney patients and their relatives who protested the hike in dialysis fee at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.

Mostafizur Rahman, sub-inspector (SI) of Panchlaish police station, registered the case against Md Mostakim, a patient and 50 to 60 unidentified others around 12:30 am.

Inspector Sadekur Rahman of Panchlaish police station said the case was filed against the patients on charges of assaulting police and obstructing their work.

Five policemen were injured while trying to remove the protesters from the road, he said.
