Dhaka: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to revitalising the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). She emphasized the need for sustained political engagement, cultural initiatives, and wider stakeholder participation to reinvigorate the regional grouping.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shama expressed these views during a farewell call with the outgoing Secretary General of SAARC, Ambassador Golam Sarwar, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting underscored the importance of renewed political attention and sustained efforts to reinvigorate the SAARC process. Shama highlighted the Foreign Ministry's intention to play a more proactive role in strengthening regional cooperation in South Asia.
Ambassador Golam Sarwar briefed the State Minister on the current state of SAARC, stressing the need for initiatives to overcome the numerous challenges facing the regional organisation. He also highlighted the continuation of SAARC's regular activities and programmes, which are supported by development partners. Additionally, Sarwar informed Shama that the SAARC Development Report is expected to be released by the end of 2026.
Shama appreciated Sarwar's leadership within the forum and expressed firm confidence that the momentum achieved during his tenure would continue under his successor. She assured Bangladesh's continued support and cooperation in advancing the SAARC process, expressing hope for a revitalised and effective regional cooperation platform.
SAARC, headquartered in Kathmandu, was established in December 1985 with the aim of promoting regional cooperation and improving the welfare and quality of life for the peoples of South Asia. However, the eight-member regional forum has been facing severe stagnation due to the deep political stalemate and rivalry between India and Pakistan.
