Dhaka Court Sentences Two Police Officers and Canteen Manager to Life Imprisonment for 1999 Murder

Dhaka: A Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals, including two police officers, to life imprisonment for the murder of Jalal Ahmed Shafi, a source of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, which took place in 1999. The ruling was delivered by Judge Mosaddek Minhaz of the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Court-4.



According to United News of Bangladesh, the individuals sentenced are Habildar Md Billal Hossain, Constable Abdur Rauf, and Anwar Hossain, who managed the DB Canteen. The court has also issued arrest warrants for the trio as they were tried in absentia.



The prosecution revealed that Jalal Ahmed Shafi left his residence in the Lalmatia area of Mohammadpur Police Station at approximately 3:00 am on March 20, 1999, to visit the DB office, carrying his vehicle license and chequebook. His decomposed body was discovered in the water tank of the DB office on March 25, 1999.



Following the discovery, SM Ali Azam Siddique, a sub-inspector from Ramna Police Station at the time, filed a case regarding the incident. Upon identifying the body, Jalal’s son, Abbas Uddin, filed a separate case on April 4, 1999, further implicating the individuals now sentenced.
