Dhaka: A nine-year-old boy named Nafis succumbed to his burn injuries at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) in the early hours today, raising the death toll to 29 from the recent air force jet crash into the Milestone School and College in Uttara. The incident occurred on Monday.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) updated the death toll to 29 as of 7:15 pm today. A total of 57 injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. Health ministry sources reported that Nafis passed away at around 12:15 am in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of NIBPS, a day after his sister succumbed to similar injuries at the same facility.
The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) had previously informed the media on Tuesday that 31 people were killed and 165 injured in the crash. Meanwhile, a medical team from Singapore General Hospital visited the injured at the institute today. NIBPS Director Professor Dr. Mohammad Nasir Uddin stated during a press briefing that the team will continue to monitor the patients for several days.
Dr. Nasir Uddin mentioned that no decision has been made to transport any of the plane crash victims out of the country. So far, 44 injured individuals have been admitted to the burn institute, where their treatment is being coordinated with the Singaporean medical team. Each case has been reviewed individually, and important decisions have been made by the experts, he added.
The NIBPS Director also explained that the patients have been categorized based on their condition: eight are in critical condition, 13 require complete bed rest, and 23 are in the intermediate category. He emphasized that the condition of these patients changes hourly, necessitating meetings every 12 hours to adjust their treatment plans accordingly.
In response to a query, Dr. Nasir Uddin noted that discussions about the duration of the Singaporean medical team's stay in Bangladesh have not yet taken place.
