Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak on Wednesday said that the country’s independence and democracy are facing tough challenges.

“We are going through a period when the country’s democracy and independence are facing challenges,” he said at a discussion meeting to mark the 59th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

It was organized by Krishak League at Awami League’s central office at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue.

Jahangir Kabir Nanak said Mirza Fakhrul wanted the release of former Home Minister Lutfar Zaman Babur and Deputy Minister Abdus Salam Pintu, who were convicted of the 21 August grenade attack. Then it is not difficult to understand their intention and purpose.

“Where do you (Mirza Fakhrul) want to take Bangladesh back? Who banned Bangabandhu’s March 7 speech?, Nanak asked.

“We are facing a huge challenge,” said Nanak.

Nanak also said the nation must launch a war against terrorism and militancy.

Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nashim, Krishak League President Sameer Chand and acting General Secretary Biswanath Sarkar Bitu, Agriculture and Cooperative Affairs Secretary Faridunnahar Laili, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua were also present at the event.
