Death row convict arrested in Shariatpur

Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police on Monday arrested a death-row convict in a case over the killing of a businessman in Shariatpur about 9 years ago.

The convict was identified as Md Babu Kazi alias Sumon, 35, son of late Harun Kazi of Bilaspur village in Zajira upazila of Shariatpur, in a media release signed by Mohammad Aslam Khan, superintendent of police (media and awareness unit) at ATU.

Tipped off, an ATU team conducted a drive around 12:15pm in Chakdhobazar area under Naria upazila of the district and arrested Kazi.

According to the case statement, police recovered the body of Md Halim,28, son of Haji Afsar Uddin, packed in a sack from an under-constructed abandoned house in Fatullah Thana on August 17, 2014.

A case was filed with the concerned police station following a complaint filed by the victim's brother Md Shamim.

Later, the court sentenced him to death in the case.

The court also fined him Tk 50,000 and six months more rigorous imprisonment.
