Police handed over the body on Monday a day after his family claimed that they did not receive the body as police gave them a condition to take it directly to their village home instead of taking it to anywhere else.

An assistant staff of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital morgue told UNB that police received the body from the morgue completing the formalities around 3 pm but none of his family members were present.

Faruque Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan police media wing said, โ€œThe body has been handed over to Sumonโ€™s father and he will be buried at his ancestral home in Nawabganj or at Azimpur graveyard.โ€

Meanwhile, Sumonโ€™s wife Jannat Akter along with other family members went to Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate Court to file a case over his death in police custody.

Jannatโ€™s brother Mosharraf Hossain said they did not receive the body and police might have handed it over to his father.

โ€œMy sister is ill. We went to court to take advice from the lawyer to file a case over Sumonโ€™s death,โ€ he said.

Sumonโ€™s family members on Saturday claimed that they did not receive the body of Sumon as police gave them a condition to take it directly to their village home instead of taking it to anywhere else.

However, police said the body was not handed over as they did not get appropriate guardian to receive it.

Postmortem of Sumon Sheikh alias Rumman, the accused in the case of theft of Hatirjheel police station, was completed in absence of his family members at the mortuary of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital on Saturday night.

Family members said after the autopsy, the police asked to take the body to Bhola, but they denied receiving it as they wanted to take the body to Sumon’s residence in Rampura Mohanagar project first.

A General Diary (GD) has been logged by the police in this incident.

Earlier talking to reporters at Hatirjheel Police Station on Saturday evening, Azimul Haque said a case was filed with Hatirjheel police station in connection with stealing of Tk 53 lakh from the office of Unilever’s Pureit Company on August 15.

Police arrested three people identified as Al Amin, Sohel Rana and Anik Hossain in connection with the incident. They are now in jail. Sumon Sheikh was identified by analyzing the CCTV footage of the place of occurrence and also interrogating the three arrestees.

Later, police arrested Sumon from his house in Rampura Mahanagar project area on Friday afternoon and recovered Tk 3,13,700 from his possession. Then he was kept in police custody around 11 pm, he said.

Rumman Sheikh, aka Sumon, was supposed to be sent to the court on Saturday morning. But he hanged himself from an iron grill with the trousers he was wearing at around 3:32 am on early Saturday.

It was seen in the CCTV footage and this footage was also shown to the deceased’s wife and relatives, said police

SI Hemayet Hossain, who was Duty Officer on Friday night, and constable Md. Zakaria have been suspended for negligence of duty.

Besides, a three-member inquiry committee headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) Tejgaon Industrial Zone Hafiz Al Farooq has been constituted.

Govt deliberately pursuing import-dependent energy policy: Speakers

Speakers at a seminar on Monday accused the Awami League government of deliberately pursuing an import-dependent energy policy only to plunder money.

โ€œTheyโ€™ve transformed the energy into a political commodity from a market commodity to use it as a tool to make money for a certain section of businessmen,โ€ said Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the BNP standing Committee.

The BNP organised the seminar titled โ€œCorruption is the Sources of Energy Crisisโ€ at the Jatiya Press Club with party secretary general Mirza FAkhrul Islamj Alamgir in the chair.

BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, who was the power and energy minister during Khaleda Ziaโ€™s government in 1991, presented the keynote paper at the seminar.

In the keynote paper, Mosharraf alleged that despite Bangladesh Petroleum Corporationโ€™s huge fund deposited with banks, the government raised the price of petroleum fuel by 51 percent without any logical reason.

He claimed that available statistics reveal the BPC has Tk 32,000 crore deposits with different banks while its three subsidiary companies have another Tk 13,000 crore deposits.

โ€œMany energy experts believe that the government could have continued the petroleum supply for next 21 months without raising prices with such deposited funds, โ€œ the BNP leader said adding, the price was increased only to plunder public money.

He said the fuel price hike had directly impacted all the sectors of the economy pushing up prices of all commodities. โ€œThis is absolutely unacceptable and a deception with people.โ€

Stating that the Awami League government is not an elected one, Mosharrf said, โ€œHad they been elected, they would have a responsibility to people and would have tried to resolve the problem without raising the fuel pricesโ€.

โ€œBut the government has been driven by a business-monger mentality which is a major reason to be worried,โ€ he said adding, the Awami League government has to be removed through a mass movement.

The seminar was also addressed by BNP standing committee members Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, former editor of New Nation Mostafa Kamal Majumder, professional body leader Engineer Rezaul Islam, environment expert Zakir Hossain, Jatiya Press Club Secretary Elias Khan and Dhaka Union of Journalist (DUJ) president Quader Gani Chowdhury.

Dr Moyeen Khan said there is no consistency with the claims of the government and the ground reality of the economy. โ€œTheyโ€™re snatching the pockets of the poor while allowing the rich to siphon off money abroad,โ€ he said.

Nazrul Islam Khan said the prices of kerosene and diesel are now highest in Bangladesh compared to many other countries like Pakistan, India and Bhutan.

Mostafa Kamal Majumder observed that the number of poor people has become double in the country while the number of rich has also increased. โ€œThis proves the sound of their development is empty.โ€

Zakir Hossain said the governmentโ€™s initiative to set up a coal-fired power plant near the Sundarbans has put the countryโ€™s environment and economy in danger.

He said the country should pursue a policy to promote renewable energy as 80 percent of the electricity could be generated from renewable sources. โ€œIf the country does not depend on its own sources to generate 80 percent of electricity, it will jeopardise the countryโ€™s energy security.โ€
