Dhaka: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has thwarted an attempt to evade nearly Taka 60 lakh in government revenue by exposing a significant quantity of undeclared garments in an imported consignment at the Dhaka Customs House. Acting on a tip-off, a special CIID team intercepted the consignment from M/S S.B. Traders before its release and conducted a thorough physical examination.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the consignment was imported under Bill of Entry No. C-765485 dated July 30, 2026. The inspection was initiated after customs clearance procedures were suspended following the intelligence alert. CIID officials discovered that the importer declared 2,699 pieces of garments, whereas the actual count was 4,319 pieces, revealing an excess of 1,620 items, which is 60.02 percent more than declared.
Significant discrepancies were found across various garment categories. For instance, the declared quantity of Lehenga Ordinary was 29 pieces, but 48 pieces were found. Similarly, Lehenga Gorgeous was declared at 13 pieces against 50 found, Premium Sharee at 112 against 120, Super Sharee at 112 against 803, Medium Sharee at 179 against 900, Girls’ Wear Set at 128 against 140, Sherwani at 18 against 120, and T-shirts at 94 against 124. Additionally, while 187 gowns were declared, only 100 were found, along with 87 extra pieces of Lehenga Ordinary, indicating a deliberate misdeclaration of the imported goods.
The CIID estimated that this attempt could have led to a revenue loss of Taka 31.71 lakh in customs duties and taxes. Including a redemption fine of an equivalent amount, the total recoverable sum stands at nearly Taka 60 lakh. A comprehensive report has been forwarded to the Dhaka Customs House for legal action.
The CIID emphasized its commitment to maintaining intelligence surveillance and conducting special operations against undeclared imports, false declarations, and customs duty evasion to protect government revenue and ensure transparency in the import-export trade.
