Accra:Cumilla A young man from Chandina upazila of Cumilla has reportedly died in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, as confirmed by his family.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the deceased, Md Sagar, 24, was the son of Md Kabir Hossain from the Chhaykot area under Chandina municipality. He was the youngest among two brothers and three sisters. Sagar came from a low-income family and was employed at a rod and cement shop in the Chandina upazila headquarters. In 2025, he moved to Russia with the assistance of the shop's manager and subsequently found work at a bakery.

While in Russia, Sagar encountered a Bangladeshi broker who enticed him with a promise of a one-time payment of Tk 30 lakh if he joined the Russian military. Sagar joined the conflict in May this year, after which his family lost contact with him.

On October 17, Sagar's family was informed by one of his friends in Russia that he had died, leaving them in despair. Sagar's uncle, Abdul Awal, stated that a broker had deceived Sagar with false promises, leading him to become a soldier in the war.

Sagar's father, Kabir Hossain, shared, "I sent him abroad by taking loans and borrowing money from others. I have not been able to speak to my son for the last four to five months. Now I hear that my son is no more."

Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Ashraful Haque said they were unaware of the incident but would investigate the matter.
