Dhaka: Cultural figures from across the country today paid tribute to BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, recognizing her as a dedicated guardian of democracy and a significant political figure whose life and efforts left an important mark on the nation. Organized by the Begum Khaleda Zia Tribute Committee, the event took place at the main auditorium of the National Theatre Hall this evening.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Begum Khaleda Zia Tribute Committee Convener and BNP Standing Committee member Begum Selima Rahman addressed the gathering as the chief guest, while former president of Jatiotabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas), Rezabuddoula Chowdhury, chaired the event. Rahman highlighted Khaleda Zia’s contributions to the cultural sector, stating that institutions like the Shilpakala Academy, theatres, art galleries, and museums bear her lasting influence on the country’s cultural development, unmatched by subsequent governments.
Rahman emphasized Khaleda Zia’s relentless struggle against political and cultural domination, commending her steadfast support for native culture and independent thought in the face of hegemonic ideologies. She noted that Khaleda Zia’s impact is evident in the realms of art, literature, and culture, which form a strong foundation for national identity.
Rezabuddoula Chowdhury also spoke at the event, recalling Khaleda Zia’s efforts in promoting democratic practices and preserving native cultures. He remarked that during her lifetime, Khaleda Zia consistently supported artists, writers, and cultural activists in their resistance against cultural dominance.
The event was attended by a diverse group of artistes, poets, writers, teachers, journalists, and cultural activists who honored the late prime minister by reciting poems and reflecting on her fight against foreign cultural influences. Participants and organizers signed a condolence book in memory of Begum Khaleda Zia, and the event concluded with a documentary screening on her life and struggles.
