Chattogram: A Chattogram court today accepted a charge sheet in a killing case linked to the July Uprising, implicating 231 individuals including former Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, and former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel. This marks the first time a charge sheet has been acknowledged by a court in a killing case related to the student-led July Mass Uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shafiqul Islam, elder brother of July Uprising martyr Shahidul Islam Shahid, filed the case with the Chandgaon police station following the killing of his younger brother. Shahidul Islam Shahid, a 37-year-old footwear shop employee, was fatally shot in the city’s Bahaddarhat area on August 3, 2024, when AL-backed armed cadres fired on a student-led mass protest. Shahid succumbed to his injuries at a private clinic after a couple of days.
The 4th court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mustafa accepted the charge sheet after reviewing its admissibility, as submitted by the Investigation Officer of the case. Assistant Public Prosecutor Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury of the CMM Court informed that Shafiqul Islam, the plaintiff, filed an objection petition against the charge sheet submitted by the investigation officer. The court dismissed the petition and approved the charge sheets against 231 individuals. So far, 84 people have been arrested in connection with the case.
The charge sheet includes 128 witnesses, comprising 28 ordinary citizens, 99 policemen, and one doctor. The Investigation Officer of the case, Md Faisal, a sub-inspector of Chandgaon Police Station, prepared and submitted the charge sheet under section 302 of the Penal Code to the CMM court on August 24, 2025.
Among those implicated in the charge sheet are Ex-CCC Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, A J M Nasir Uddin, former AL lawmakers A B M Fazle Karim Chowdhury, M A Latif, Abu Reza Muhammad Nezamuddin Nadvi, Mohiuddin Bachchu, Abdus Salam, Didarul Alam Didar, S M Al Mamun, Noman Al Mahmud, City AL President Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, and former CCC councilors Esrarul Haque, Nur Mostafa Tinu, Salimullah Bachchu, Ziaul Haque Sumon, and BCL city unit president Nurul Azim Roni.
