Dhaka: A crude bomb exploded on the road in front of the main gate of the Supreme Court in the capital on Tuesday afternoon. The explosion followed the announcement of a significant verdict by the International Crimes Tribunal, which delivered death sentences to seven leaders of the Awami League and its associate bodies. These sentences were handed down in relation to crimes against humanity committed during the mass uprising in July 2024.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the explosion occurred around 1:45 pm, approximately 15 to 20 minutes after the tribunal's verdict was pronounced. The blast resulted in a loud noise, causing panic and prompting many people in the vicinity to flee in different directions.
The incident briefly halted traffic on the road, but normalcy was eventually restored. Authorities have not yet identified the individuals responsible for the explosion. Police responded swiftly to the scene, collecting evidence and attempting to retrieve CCTV footage from nearby cameras to ascertain the identities of those involved.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station Moniruzzaman stated that no arrests had been made in connection with the incident. He confirmed, "We are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas. The investigation is underway."
