Dhaka:Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) on Monday strongly condemned remarks by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir, demanding a retraction within 24 hours. The IGP's comments questioned journalists' professional integrity and responsibility.

According to United News of Bangladesh, CRAB warned it would initiate a strong, united response with other journalist organizations if the IGP did not withdraw his statements within the specified timeframe. At an event in Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar on Monday, the IGP claimed that journalists report police ineffectiveness when not receiving money from drug dealers, remarks published in various national media outlets.

CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal and General Secretary M M Badshah issued a joint statement emphasizing that such comments from a senior police official were undesirable and concerning. They highlighted the essential role of both police in drug elimination and independent journalism in ensuring accountability for police activities.

The CRAB leaders suggested that specific allegations against journalists should be based on evidence and addressed through legal channels. They asserted that generalized allegations without evidence do not demonstrate responsible conduct and could negatively impact public perception of journalists.

Journalists, the statement noted, are tasked with monitoring state institutions, exposing irregularities, and bringing matters of public interest to light. The leaders urged the IGP to promptly retract his comments and adopt a responsible stance. Failing this, CRAB plans to collaborate with other journalist bodies to protect journalists' dignity, freedom, and professional rights.
