Sherpur: A court here today canceled the bail of Sherpur district unit Awami League's former general secretary, Advocate Chandon Kumar Paul, and issued an arrest warrant against him. Senior Judicial Magistrate of Sherpur, Md Hassan Bhuiyan, made the decision to cancel Chandon Kumar Paul's time petition, which was moved by his lawyer in court.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the public prosecutor (PP) of the District and Sessions Judge Court, Advocate Abdul Mannan, represented the state in the proceedings. Notably, Chandon Kumar Paul's lawyer was absent during the hearing. Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Ashrafur Nahar Ruby and Court Inspector Ziaur Rahman provided assistance to the PP.
Chandon Kumar Paul, who previously served as a public prosecutor in the district, had recently secured ad interim bail from both the High Court and the District and Sessions Judge Court. Meanwhile, various groups, including leaders and workers of the anti-discrimination student movement and members of martyred families, staged a sit-in at the court premises and in front of the Deputy Commissioner's (DC's) office. They demanded the fulfillment of their seven-point agenda, which included the immediate withdrawal of the District and Sessions Judge and its Public Prosecutor.
Notable speakers at the protest included Mahmudul Hassan Rakib, central organizer of Jatiya Juba Shakti, NCP leader Rashedul Hassan Dewan, and former leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, Shahnur Rahman Sayem and Morshed Jitu. The demonstrators eventually withdrew their program following discussions with local Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman.
Chandon Kumar Paul was released on bail from the District and Sessions Judge Court on September 28, following an order from the High Court. However, on October 6, leaders and workers of the anti-discrimination student movement, along with members of martyred families and July warriors, staged further demonstrations demanding the cancellation of his bail. In response, District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Jarihul Kabir, acting on a petition from the PP, imposed a travel ban on Paul and ordered the seizure of his passport.
