Dhaka:A court has ordered the freezing of 83 bank accounts linked to former Special Branch chief Md Monirul Islam and his family, amid graft allegations.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court issued the order following a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The accounts include 11 held by Monirul, five by his wife Sayla Farzana, 40 by his brother-in-law Rezaul Alam Shahin, and 27 by Shahin's wife, Sanjida Khanom Tumpa, as confirmed by ACC public relations officer Tanjir Ahmed.
The ACC alleges that Monirul and others embezzled Taka 25 crore by manipulating the NGOs Kuwait Society for Relief and Sharjah Charity International, labeling them as militant organizations. They are accused of acquiring illegal assets in their names and those of family members through corruption and abuse of power.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Monirul and his family possess illegal assets in Dhaka and other areas of the country. The inquiry by the ACC has uncovered numerous bank accounts with a total balance of Taka 14.25 crore, which the accused allegedly attempted to withdraw and transfer abroad.
The ACC's plea emphasized the necessity of freezing the accounts to ensure a proper investigation.
