Dhaka: A court here today ordered the freezing of five bank accounts belonging to former joint secretary of the National Parliament Secretariat AKMG Kibria Mazumder, which contain a total of Taka 38.81 lakh. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order, allowing a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the anti-graft body in its plea stated that Kibria, who was also a personal secretary to former Railways Minister Muzibul Haque, has amassed illegal wealth of hundreds of crores, and it is probing allegations against him. The plea emphasized that although AKMG Kibria Mazumder is currently in jail, there is a risk that his family members or any other person on his behalf might withdraw money from his accounts and launder the sum abroad. Therefore, the accounts should be frozen immediately to prevent any potential financial misconduct.
In a related development, the same court also ordered the freezing of 17 bank accounts belonging to SM Jahangir Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables and Allied Products Exporters Association (BFVAPEA), along with his affiliated businesses. This action is part of the ongoing efforts by the authorities to clamp down on corruption and financial irregularities within the country.
