Dhaka: A court here today sentenced Sohel Rana and his wife, Ruma Akhter alias Sumana, to life-term imprisonment for killing a cloth trader named Kamrul Hasan in the Sadarghat area in 2015. Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam delivered the verdict in presence of the accused today. Later, they were sent to jail.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convicts were also fined Tk. 10,000 each, failing which they have to spend an additional three months in jail. Besides, the court announced that the accused will be in jail for another three years for hiding the body after the murder.
Case details reveal that a case was filed over the murder and disappearance of cloth trader Kamrul Hasan at Sadarghat, centering on a money transaction on September 23, 2015. The victim’s maternal aunt, Advocate Rehena Parveen, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court after she failed to contact and find Kamrul.
The court later ordered Paltan Police Station to investigate the case. Police submitted a charge sheet to the court, but the complainant declined to accept it. The court then ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case again. After the investigation, PBI Police Inspector Harunar Rashid submitted the charge sheet to the court on October 9, 2017, accusing two people.
The investigation report stated that Kamrul Hasan was murdered, and his body was found stuffed in a sack and dumped into a river. On June 5, 2018, the court framed charges against the accused and ordered a trial. During the trial, 14 out of 24 witnesses testified in court.
