Dhaka: The Council of Advisers has given principal approval to the draft of the Bangladesh Law Officers (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, with the aim of strengthening the existing attorney service. This decision was made during a meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, as stated in a release from the Cabinet Division. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ordinance seeks to amend the Bangladesh Law Officers Order, 1972, to enable the immediate appointment of competent and efficient law officers, especially since the parliament stands dissolved. Alongside this, the council also approved drafts of the International Crimes (Tribunals) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, and the National Human Rights Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024. The meeting further decided to scrap the 'Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act, 2010 (Amendment 2021)', granting final approval to a new draft of the law pending the law ministry's vetti ng. Additionally, the council resolved to observe International Migrants Day and National Expatriates' Day together, consolidating the celebrations on December 18 instead of the separate observances on December 18 and December 30, respectively. Furthermore, the Comptroller and Auditor General's office informed the council about Taka 1,261.05 crore in expenditures by various departments from fiscal year 2018 to 2024 for celebrating Mujib Barsha. In response, the council decided to cancel all related budgets for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, as per the Cabinet Division's press release.
