Joypurhat: Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Dr Mohammad Abdul Momen stated that while corruption cannot be completely eliminated from the country, it can be significantly reduced through collective efforts. He addressed a public hearing organized by the ACC in collaboration with the Joypurhat district administration at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Momen highlighted that corruption was a key factor leading to the departure of several prominent figures from the country, including an ousted former Prime Minister, a former Chief Justice, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, and the Khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. He emphasized the need for introspection within the ACC itself, including among its officials and employees, to ensure sincerity and transparency, which he believes will help in reducing corruption.
The event was chaired by Joypurhat Deputy Commissioner Afroza Akhtar Chowdhury, and the welcome address was delivered by ACC Rajshahi Divisional Office Director Fazlul Haque. Other notable speakers included ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhtar Hossain, Joypurhat Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdul Wahab, and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md. Sabur Ali.
During the session, allegations of corruption were raised against various local institutions, such as Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital, BRTA, Joypurhat Sugar Mill, Municipality, LGED, police stations, prison, land offices, union parishads, and social service departments. Dr Momen took these complaints seriously and instructed relevant authorities to take suitable action.
Over the past eight days, 67 complaints were submitted at different booths across Joypurhat town against government, semi-government, and private entities. Of these, 33 complaints were selected for the hearing based on their significance and relevance to various ministries and agencies. Dr Momen assured that all complaints would be addressed in due course and urged the administration to ensure timely and effective solutions.
