Rajshahi: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced plans to amend the constitution with a focus on aligning it with the expectations of the public and honoring the aspirations of the martyrs from the student-mass uprising. This declaration was made in response to journalists’ inquiries following the training closing parade of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister outlined that the amendment process will be rooted in a consensus-based agreement, as stipulated by the ‘July National Charter’ signed among political parties. He further stated that a dedicated Constitution Reform Committee would be established to conduct thorough discussions and formulate amendment proposals. When questioned about incorporating Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of independence in the constitution, Ahmed indicated that this issue would be considered by the reform committee.

He explained that the amendment strategy would adhere to the July National Charter, prioritizing the current public expectations and the aspirations of the martyrs of the July Uprising. The committee is tasked with drafting a proposal that emphasizes the key issues outlined in the charter, which is seen as a document of political consensus. Any final decisions on amendments will follow the constitutional process, involving multiple readings in the national parliament.

During the certificate distribution ceremony, where he served as the chief guest, Ahmed addressed the newly commissioned officers, emphasizing that their uniform symbolizes responsibility, sacrifice, and service, beyond mere power. He encouraged them to uphold integrity, courage, and humanity in their service to the nation.

The minister also extended congratulations to the members of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch for successfully completing their training, expressing well-wishes for their future endeavors. The event was attended by Inspector General of Police Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and Principal (Additional IGP) of Bangladesh Police Academy G M Azizur Rahman.
