Subarnachar: Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne today said that people in the coastal areas of greater Noakhali have long been fighting against natural disasters to survive. ‘Residents living along the riverbanks have continuously facing river erosion, flooding and inundation for long in the region,’ he made these remarks here this afternoon while visiting erosion-hit areas along the Meghna River at Subarnachar area.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Minister emphasized that the country now has an elected government, and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is paying close attention to alleviating the public sufferings. He stated that the government is giving importance to every public demand and taking necessary actions accordingly.
The Minister highlighted that the government has completed three months in office and is already working across the country to protect public interests. Referring to the ongoing erosion, he described witnessing severe erosion of the Meghna River firsthand, where markets, schools, colleges, and agricultural lands are being affected.
The Minister recounted seeing a school collapsing during the visit. He assured that emergency measures have already been undertaken to prevent further erosion, aligning with the expectations of local residents. He expressed confidence that collective efforts would benefit the people.
Among others, Mohammad Shahjahan, Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, and Mahbub Alamgir Alo, along with local leaders, were present during the visit.
