Dhaka:The Coast Guard's East Zone is conducting comprehensive operations and public awareness initiatives to protect mother Hilsha fish during their critical spawning season. Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan communicated this information today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a nationwide prohibition has been imposed on the catching, transporting, storing, marketing, and selling of Hilsha fish to ensure their safe spawning during the peak breeding season. This ban is effective for 22 days, from October 8 to October 29.
To enforce this ban, the Coast Guard East Zone is actively conducting regular patrols, special operations, and maintaining strict surveillance within its jurisdiction. The agency has heightened its intelligence-based surveillance and is executing round-the-clock patrols in rivers and coastal areas.
In an effort to raise awareness among fishermen, the Coast Guard is employing loudspeaker announcements, distributing informational leaflets, and engaging in discussions to encourage compliance with the law.
Furthermore, the Coast Guard is collaborating with the district administration, the Department of Fisheries, other law enforcement agencies, and relevant organizations to carry out joint operations and enforce strict actions against violators. Lieutenant Commander Abu Saleh Al-Mamun, Captain of BCGS Port Grand, emphasized the importance of conservation, stating, "We believe that conservation today ensures abundance tomorrow," and urged respect for the ban to support the blue economy by protecting "mother" Hilsha.
