Khulna: An elaborate cleanliness drive was carried out in Khulna city today as part of the nationwide programme “Cleanliness Day Every Saturday,” aimed at preventing the spread of dengue and chikungunya. The programme, reportedly undertaken following directives from Tarique Rahman, saw active participation of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this morning, the administrator visited and took part in the drive in Ward No. 6 of Daulatpur area. Under his leadership, KCC workers, local public representatives, volunteers, and common people unitedly conducted the cleanliness drive. During the drive, special emphasis was placed on cleaning drains, canals, garbage dumps, and other vulnerable places also identified as mosquito breeding centers. Residents were also urged to remove stagnant water from around their homes and dispose of waste in designated places.
Speaking on the occasion, Manju emphasized that preventing mosquito breeding remains the most effective way to control dengue and chikungunya, stressing that public awareness and participation are crucial. “It is not possible for the city corporation alone to face this challenge, collective efforts are needed,” he added. He further noted that observing the programme every Saturday would help build awareness among residents so they keep their surroundings clean.
As part of the campaign, awareness activities were carried out with the slogan “Saturday’s pledge: keep our homes clean.” Leaflets were distributed, public announcements made, and awareness publicity. Lauding the initiative, local people said the impact of dengue and chikungunya in the city would be reduced if the activities continue.
