Dhaka: The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) has reported a violent clash and a series of chase-counter chase incidents between activists of two political parties in Kakrail, Dhaka, causing significant unrest in the area. The altercation, which erupted around 8:00 pm, resulted in multiple injuries and necessitated the deployment of both army and police forces to restore order.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the police initially attempted to manage the situation but the intensity of the violence escalated, leading to a call for military assistance as some police officers were assaulted and injured on the scene. The law enforcement officers urged the parties to remain calm, adhere to legal boundaries, and settle their disputes peacefully. However, certain activists disregarded these warnings, orchestrating mob violence and targeting police personnel.
The violence further intensified around 9:00 pm with activists engaging in a torch march, hurling bricks, and attempting to set fire to various establishments, significantly disrupting the movement of residents in nearby areas such as Bijoynagar and Nayapaltan. Despite efforts by law enforcers to mediate peacefully, the situation necessitated the use of force to ensure public security.
The ISPR statement noted that five army personnel sustained injuries while assisting in restoring order. It underscored the Bangladesh government's zero-tolerance stance on mob violence and reiterated the army's commitment to act decisively against such disturbances to preserve public safety, peace, and the rule of law.
